Every winter, thousands of humpback and gray whales fill the waters off Cabo. December through April is pure magic — here is how to see it right.
The season
Whales arrive from Alaska in December and linger until mid-April, with January to March the peak. Humpbacks breach spectacularly close to shore; gray whales pass on their way to the Baja lagoons where they calve.
Choosing a tour
Small zodiac boats get you low and close; catamarans offer shade, bathrooms and easier boarding. Morning trips have calmer seas. Choose operators who respect distance regulations — the whales come to you more often than you’d think.
No boat required
From December to March you can spot blows and breaches from Medano Beach and the Pacific viewpoints — bring coffee to the beach at 8 AM and just watch the horizon.
